Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I have been diagnosed with Graves disease and have been on methimazole for 6 months. My last 2 dr visits with the endocrinologist have indicated my levels are now in the hypothyroid range. The dr has taken me down on the methimazole to 2.5 mg per day. I am currently experiencing major hair loss and am stressed out about that. Is the hair loss due more from the methimazole or the fact that I am now in the hypothyroid range? This dr can not seem to get me on the right dosage of meds. FRUSTRATED.
Hello Thyroid disorders ,be it hypo or hyperthyroidism, can cause hair loss. Even the drug methimazole can sometimes cause hair loss. I would suggest you to get your free T3 and free T4 and TSH levels checked atleast quarterly till your levels are controlled. Then every 6 monthly. Keep thyroid levels normal will hel you in preventing hair loss. Hope this helps. Thanks.
