Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter had an echo test on the heart. The doctor said she had inflammation around the heart they have not seen before. She is athletic and plays soccer in college. She did have mono in the past. She has an apt next week. Can Mono virus cause this inflammation around the heart lining? She has been having hard time running she gets out of breath and heavy in the heart.
Hello! Thank you for your question! Regarding your concern about heart involvement by such an infection, the answer is Yes! Mono (EBV) virus, though more rarely than other complications, can cause inflammation of the heart in the form of pericarditis or myo-pericarditis; I don't know the severity of heart involvement by the infection, as I don't have the detailed echo report (is it only pericarditis?Does excessive pericardial fluid is present or no? Are there evidence of heart muscle (myocardium) involvement (in such a case the complication is more severe ( if the cardiac function is lowered). Nevertheless I would like to lighten your anxiety as the mono infection is more common in the age of your daughter; and the clinical background resolves usually well after some weeks of symptomatic treatment and follow up. I would recommend for your daughter to avoin strain and competitive activity for at least 1-2 months and follow up the heart (pericarditis) recovery with repeated cardiac ultrasound (echo). If you bring me concrete echo results I could be more specific about your daughter situation. I wish a fast and quiet recovery to your daughter! Feel free to ask me when ever you want! Greeting from Dr. Iliri
