Hi, sorry to hear about your son.
While reading the first part of your description itself, CMT was on my mind. CMT is not uncommon. CMT can present with both central and
peripheral nervous system symptoms and signs. Dypraxia, dystonia (lack of proper tone in the body),
dyskinesia (lack of proper movement) are quite common.
In addition because of specific involvement of peripheral nervous system from the
spinal cord,
foot drop can and cavus foot can occur. Here the deep peroneal or common peroneal nerve is affected and can give rise to lack of eversion (or sideward and upward raise of the foot). Also the anterior
tibial nerve can be affected which can give rise to foot drop and a flapping gait while walking.
Either way treatment will require splinting of the ankle, which will relax the muscles that push the ankle down(plantar). Depending on the presence of cavus foot(high arch), which is common in CMT, he might require surgery to correct cavus foot as well
