Can Overweight People Undergo Laparoscopic Surgery?
hi good morning i have a question for you im getting laparscopic surgery on tuesday and i spoke to a nurse yesterday and she told me that the anthegelogist wants to speack to me i guess because i weigh 355 and im going to be put under and is it possible i wont get surgery because im overweight and they say this is a one day thing but i doubt but can you help me
Hello, Yes, I can help you. First of all, calm down. They already know your weight and they scheduled you anyway. It is normal procedure for the anaesthesiologist to want to speak to the patient prior to the procedure. Yes, you are at higher risk because of your weight in maintaining your pO2 levels just like you are at risk for sleep apnea and other breathing problems. It is nothing out of the ordinary at your wt. level! So relax. Don't worry. Take one day at a time. My best wishes to you. . .Kathryn Shattler,MS,RDN
