Can Pituitary- Hypothalamic Injury Cause Hyperthyroidism?

I had severe facial fractures / head trauma in 2009 , and haven t recovered !! The fractures I sustained are Bilateral Lefort III , Lefort I - comminuted , Bilateral Orbital Blow-out fractures and bilateral naso-orbital ethmoid fractures , Comminuted mandible fracture of the body region . I was initially knocked unconcious and severely beaten . EMS responded and turned me overto ER staff Unconcious and 100% Non-breather . After stabilization , I was transported to Trama Center where I underwent ORIF / NOE fracture repair . I was unconcious for around 12 days and as I have tried to recover , it seems Like I have been plagued with a list of constant persisternt symptoms . Severe and frequent throbbing migraines , visual issues , dizzy spells , fatigue , low energy , poor concentration and trouble focusing . In 2011 I was given a blood test by my provider that came back as hyperthyroid , and was given medication which I took for a while and again in December 2012 , I was told again , by another blood test that I had hyperthyroid and now agin recently the same . Could this be due to possible pituitary- hypothalmus injury , at the point of my naso-orbital ethmoid fractures , or their repair , that caused injury , causeing hyperthyroid ? Are the naso-orbital ethmoid and the Lefort II fractures considered a anterior skull base fracture ?

Hi,

Really sorry to hear of your accident and sufferings. While many of the symptoms like dizziness, headache etc may be because of the trauma, the stress and depression also may be after the accident what we call post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, the hyperthyroidism is unlikely to be caused by the trauma as its very unlikely that a trauma would cause a gland to overperform. Yes, we can do some test which may tell us why is your thyroid overactive.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
