Can Spirulina Be Taken While On SSRIs?

Hi, I m currently taking the SSRI med Paroxetene (Paxil), 20mg daily. I am looking at the possibility of adding Spirulina to my daily regimen, but am concerned with the possibility of serotonin syndrome, as the spirulina contains tryptophan. I ve come across a lot of varying information on the web as to whether or not it s safe to combine the two. Any extra input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello,

I have gone through your query and I am of the opinion that it's better to avoid taking Spirulina while taking SSRIs.

Spirulina is a type of nutrient obtained from “algae” (cyanobacteria) that is high in protein and a good source of antioxidants, B-vitamins and other nutrients.

It is largely made up of protein and essential amino acids (including Tryptophan). Although purified Tryptophan increases brain serotonin, foods containing Tryptophan like Spirulina do not.

This is because Tryptophan is transported into the brain by a transport system that is active toward all the large neutral amino acids and Tryptophan is the least abundant amino acid in protein.

However, if you are consuming too much Spirulina while taking SSRIs (like Paroxetine) it can cause 'serotonin syndrome' which is characterized by symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, high blood pressure and heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

So, in my opinion considering the potential risk of 'serotonin syndrome' it is better to avoid taking Spirulina while taking the antidepressants SSRIs and consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective but safer nutrient and antioxidant supplements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
