Can Stomach Crunches Aggravate An Umbilical Hernia?

I have an umbilical hernia. It is nothing serious and I ve had a doctor look at it. I will probably have repair surgery for it this year. I have stopped doing my daily stomach crunches, that I do to keep in shape. If I resume with the crunches, will it further aggravate the hernia?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Stomach crunches and other similar exercises can increase the intra abdominal pressure (pressure inside your abdomen) and can worsen the hernia. The same applicable after the surgery also. Similar manoeuvres can cause recurrence of hernia. You have to avoid heavy exercises at least six months following the surgery.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
