Can Testosterone Levels Increase Male Pattern Baldness?

Hi,I have male pattern baldness and want to start lifting weights to get in shape but I m afraid It will speed up my hairloss due to increased testosterone which I m thinking would increase DHT levels. Could you advise if this would cause acceleration of my hair loss, both sides of my family have hairloss? Thanks for your time Kind regards Craig

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Lifting weight would neither increase Serum Testosterone levels nor would it lead to an increased DHT level in hair follicle as long as you don't take any supplements or Anabolic steroids for muscle building.
In your case the most likely etiology for hair loss and reduction of hair density is Androgenetic alopecia.
Minoxidil and Finasteride have approval for there use in androgenetic alopecia in males.
If I was the treating doctor I would have suggested topical 5% minoxidil to be used twice daily along with once daily Oral finasteride. These are prescription medications.
Oral finasteride is an antiandrogen and it would inhibit the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicle. Finasteride won't alter serum Testosterone levels either.
Therefore, if you desire, you may safely begin with therapy for androgenetic alopecia.
Treatment is aimed at arresting further progression of patterned hair loss and even regain new hair, if the hair loss has not been of a long standing duration
I would suggest that you visit a dermatologist in your region for the needful. Your dermatologist will tell you about androgenetic alopecia and its treatment, in more detail.

Regards
