Can The Depo-Provera Shot Affect One's Immune System?
Can the depo shot compromise your immune system? I have now heard so many horror stories about it and have been on it for a little over a year I believe. I recently moved to Utah and work outside everyday and have been sick more than I have been healthy.
Several observational studies have suggested an association between the use of hormonalcontraception, in particular injectable depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), and an increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition and transmission.
DMPA acts as a potent inhibitor of innate and adaptive immune mechanisms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Tushar Kanti Biswas,

Can The Depo-Provera Shot Affect One's Immune System?
Hi, Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) contraceptive injection inhibits secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, thereby preventing follicular maturation and ovulation (contraceptive effect). Several observational studies have suggested an association between the use of hormonal contraception, in particular injectable depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), and an increased risk of HIV-1 acquisition and transmission. DMPA acts as a potent inhibitor of innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
