Can Throat Examination By Numbing The Throat Cause Any Problem?
Dear Dr Bhatti - I had been advised to have the back of my throat examined by an ENT doctor - which I did this week - a simple mirror and my tongue held down which was difficult as I was gagging. She wants to numb my throat with spray and look further down and then if this is not satisfactory use a tube up my nose - she assures me I will feel no pain but I am almost phobic about having anything put down my throat or up my nose - is this procedure as horrible as I am imagining - I can hardly sleep at night for worrying about this .... thank you.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The procedure that is described by your doctor is nasendoscopy. This procedure may cause discomfort but it is not painful. It is usually a simple and easy procedure that is done daily on thousands of patients without any complications. If you feel this discomfort is unbearable, ask your doctor for a local anesthetic spray or a pediatric nasoendoscope tube. Don't worry too much and take care.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
