Can Vaseline Prevent Dry, Peeling Rashes Around The Mouth With Cracks On Sides, Have History Of Canker Sores?

I'm 23, female, with a long history of getting canker sores from dry, crunchy, and/or fried foods. Lately (and thankfully), I haven't been getting any canker sores since I switched to Sensodyne foam toothpaste (well, maybe at least one a month). Unfortunately, a new problem has arisen - this red, dry, peeling rash around my mouth with bad, painful cracks on the sides of my mouth. I can't tell if this is a fungal infection of some sort or if it's from using Chapstick. In the past I've found it to be a combination of the overuse of Chapstick and dry, cold weather, but I'm starting to suspect it's my Chapstick. I've discontinued it for now and using Vaseline on the affected area. Am I on the right track?

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

I would keep a possibility of angular cheiltis (due to possible deficiency of B- complex vitamins) along with perioral dermatitis. Perioral dermatitis is definitely getting aggravated by cold, dry weather.

Avoid using soaps on your face as soap will cause further dryness.

Apart from using a moisturizer i would advice that you use a moderately potent steroid twice daily for a week to help the red peeling rash around the mouth heal faster.

Once daily B-complex vitamin for any possible deficiency that may have led to angular chelitis, would be sufficient in your case.

take care
regards
