Can Walking Cause Pain And Slow Healing Of A Broken Arm?

My son was in a car accident 7 weeks ago and broke his arm at the top near the shoulder. He had surgery and metal was put in. He is still in a lot of pain. Since he had been trying to lose weight before the accident he is still walking a mile a day and he walks with a book bag on his back with weights in it . My question is can that be causing the pain and hindering his healing. He starts physical therapy tomorrow.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Fracture takes time to heal which is usually between 2 months to 6 months. Since your son was operated 7 weeks back he should not carry weights on back. That may be reason for pain. Also initial pain due to fracture will decrease as fracture starts uniting. He can walk as much as he is conformable without lifting weight on back. You should take advise from operating surgeon before going further. X-ray of involved should be taken before starting physical therapy to assess progress in healing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
