Can Withdrawal From Claratin Cause Itchy Skin And Eyes?

Hello, I took Claratin-D for many years and suspected it wasn t as effective so switched to Allegra-D 2 days ago. I have since developed itchy skin and eyes and a mild sunburned feeling all over. I have heard of this itchy withdrawal. How long should this last if I am now on Allegra-D? Should I go back on the Claratin-D and titrate down first before starting the Allegra-D? I did notice the Allegra-D worked immediately to eliminate the post nasal drip and ear fluid I was experiencing. Thank you!

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Claritin-D contains a combination of loratadine and pseudoephedrine.
Allegra-D contains a combination of fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine. Both loratadine & fexofenadine are antihistamines that competitively antagonize histamine at the H1-receptor site and thus reduce the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose, post nasal drip.
Any of these two drugs can be given for symptomatic relief (nasal and non-nasal) of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis. There may be variation in individual's response to the drugs and dose not require any titration.Take one of these two drugs to which you fell better symptomatically.
