Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Withdrawal From Amitriptyline Cause Muscle Spasms And Skin Itching?
I stopped using amitriptyline 50 mg last week after taking it for several years. I am experiencing severe muscle spasms in my neck and upper back since two days after stopping. I am also experiencing skin surface itching that started yesterday and wondered if these could be withdrawal symptoms.
The symptoms of muscle spasms and itching can definitely be side effects of amitriptyline withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms are more likely to happen if you withdraw abruptly rather than a slow taper off over a period of weeks. The body aches can last up to a few weeks. The itching usually goes away more quickly, such as in a week. If your symptoms don't start to abate in that time frame, you may want to see your doctor.
I am sorry you are suffering these symptoms right now. Best wishes to you.
