Can Working Near A Slaughter House Cause Persistent Cough?

I am a male, 51, working in an establishment adjoining a slaughter house where thousands of poultry birds are slaughtered daily. To me, the stench emanating from the decomposing feed, excreta of the birds and the meat is just unbearable. Furthermore, due to the slaughterhouse the moisture content within our premises is too high. Recently I have developed extremely nagging cough . No medicine is effective. Can it be attributed to the facts mentioned above? Can it be clinically verified? Sushil Chandra Jain Bareilly (U.P.) YYYY@YYYY

Pulmonologist 's  Response
The cough appears to be allergic in nature and the allergens may be from the slaughter house where large number of animals are present at a given time. Allergens may be from the animal proteins or fungal spores as fungus grows in hot and humid and unhygienic conditions. Your cough may be a form of asthma called `cough variant asthma`. You may find out the allergens by skin testing but it`s a tedious process and it will be difficult to say if allergens are originating from this particular place. For your cough take a mantair lc and aerocort inhaler If it does`nt help, consult a pulmonologist.
