Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My PCP just prescribed Amlodipine Besylate 5 mg. I take 20 mg of Simvastatin in the evenings (daily). I have read here that these two meds may be an issue when taken together. What should I know and what do I look out for in terms of adverse interaction of these two drugs?
Amlodipine oral increases levels of simvastatin oral by other mechanisms. Benefits of taking these drugs together should be carefully weighed against the potential risks of combination. The potential for increased risk of muscle damage/breakdown (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Limit simvastatin dose to no more than 20 mg/day when taken. Reconfirm with your clinician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
