Welcome to HCM.The repeated hand washing and checking doors are indicative of a possible Obsessive -Compulsive Disorder(OCD).It would help if you discuss this matter with your doctor /mental health professional or psychiatrist.Medication like SSRIs and counselling will help with the OCD.Excessive hand washing may damage the skin of the hands and should be avoided.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi.
Repetitive checking behavior, fear of dirt and contamination, fear of harm to near and dear ones, repetitive hand washing behavior - all these are Obsessive Compulsive symptoms. They usually are recognized by the person as being senseless and persisting without a cause, but still the person finds hard to get rid of them and this causes anxiety.

These symptoms, if persisting in an exaggerated manner and causing significant socio-occupational impairment, need to be addressed.

Please consult a psychiatrist. Modern psychotherapies like Cognitive Behavior therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) have emerged as first line management options for OCD. Drugs are also available to address the issues, and the prognosis is quite satisfactory.

Hope this helps.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sundar Gnanavel's  Response
Hello......
Thanks for your query. What you describe are characteristic of obsessions i.e. repetitive, intrusive, what you consider as absurd and unreasonable associated with distress. I would suggest you undergo a thorough psychiatric evaluation focussing on screening of anxiety disorders including OCD. The therapy includes anti-OCD drugs like SSRI s as well as psychotherapy techniques like ERP/ exposure and response prevention. Wish you speedy recovery and good health.
Regards
