Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I thought I was having a heart attack and went to the ER and they ruled it out after blood work, an ECG and X-Rays. Since then I have been having chest discomfort and believe it is gas and a GI issue as when I took tums I feel fine. I am having a stress test tomorrow and an echo sat just to make sure it isn t my heart. Should I be concerned?
Hello, Minas1072,
The situation that you were in is not uncommon. Significant
visits to the emergency room with chest pain ends up not due
to heart attack. Most of these cases turn out to be symptoms
are due to acid reflux, backing up of stomach acid into the
esophagus causing heartburn or chest pain. I am glad that you
are having a complete cardiac work up including stress test and echo.
Especially, if you are older than 40 years and have a family history of
heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, this
step is a must before assuming that acid reflux is the culprit.
Wish you good health.
