Child. Fluctuating Size Of Hydrocele On Left Side, Painful To Touch. No Suggestion Of Furthur Tests. Concerning?

My son was diagnosed at age 2 with a hydrocele. It's on the left side and fluctuates in size but not greatly. Today I noticed it was quite larger than normal but he isn't complaining of pain. When I try to look he whines and cries and says it hurts but doesn't complain otherwise. Family doc says he's fine but hasn't ordered any further testing and I'm worried a out the fluctuation.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Fluctuating in the size of hydrocele is suggestive of communicating hydrocele or inguinal hernia.

Child needs physical examination by a pediatric surgeon.

The pain on touch is due to testicular sickening sensation.

Ultrasound scrotum will tell the nature of swelling.

As you found there is increase in the size of swelling I advise you to consult the pediatric surgeon for physical examination and for further advise on the treatment.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
