Child Became Unconscious After A Fall. CT Scan Says Moderate Concussion With Laceration To Scalp. What To Do?
My 8 year fell head first into a stone bench at school today. He was unconcious for 2-3 mins. Woke up confused with slow inappropriate responses. He was transported by ambulance and taken for x-rays to clear C-spine and CT, all clear. "Moderate concussion with laceration to scalp". He has been resting but slow. Now he complains of a numb right hand and lower arm; no other symptoms have worsened. Should I be concerned? It's been 12 hours since he hit his head...
Hello
Thank you for placing your query with Health Care Magic
It will be difficult to comment with out having a look at the CT scan
However if most of the symptoms have remained static then you should not worry too much. But it is important that you relay this symptoms of numbness to your treating surgeon. It won't be significant in all probability but its best not to ignore it. Numbness is more commonly seen in spinal problems but it needs to to be documented as it is not easy for a 8 year old to detect that. If it worsens, it may be worthwhile to get a MRI of the spine to be absolutely sure. However a good examination by the doctor is must before we undertake any such measures. If he is improving otherwise, you should not worry. Children respond to head injuries very well and he should be up and about pretty soon.
Hope that helps
God bless you
