Child Diagnosed With Underactive Thyroid. Taking Synthroid. Having Tachycardia, Dizziness, Nausea. Is It Normal?
My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and placed on synthroid 75mcg. Her tsh was 12.37 free t4 was1.1 and hyperthyroid peroxidase antibodies were 279. She reacted very poorly to the 75mcg with tachycardia, clamminess, unrelenting dizziness and nausea. Her dr ordered it to be held for 2 days then restarted at 50 mcg. She is still a little tachycardic at 130 and very hyperactive in general. She has not slept for more than a few hours every night since starting. Is this to be expected or should I be looking for a specialist?

Your daughter has been diagnosed as hypothyroid and put on the synthroid 75 mcg. Following this she developed tachycardia, dizziness, and nausea. The symptoms she developed could be due to 75 mcg of synthroid.75 mcg even 50 mcg is probably high for her. Her physician has done the right thing that he has reduced dose of synthroid. She probably needs a further decrease in dose. Re consult her treating physician who may further reduce the dose. If her symptoms don’t settle down after further decrease in dose, consultation with endocrinologist is advisable
