Child Has Cough, Low Grade Fever, Hoarse Voice. Any Advice?
Hello, I have a two year old that suddenly started coughing this morning and developed a low grade fever by noon. She sounds very barky and her voice is hoarse. Her fever is now at 102.4 and climbing. She isn t coughing much, but when she does it sounds pretty bad. She is taking 36 breaths a minute while sleeping. Any advice on making it through the night, or should I take her to urgent care? Thanks.
Hello
Fever and cough with hoarse voice suggests laryngeal and/or tracheal involvement. Respiratory rate of 36/ min in this age group is normal. Fever may also cause increase in respiratory rate. If there is no respiratory distress in the form of noisy sound, visible retraction above sternum and in chest, color of baby is pink then it is mild and does not need urgent care. Give paracetamol to the baby for fever and maintain hydration of the baby. Consult your physician for proper clinical evaluation as child may need antibiotics and nebulisation.
