Child Has Loose Motions, Mucus In Stools. Prescribed Oflomac. Lactose Intolerance?
Hi, we have 9 month old and getting loose motions from last 2-3 days. Today, the stool also had some mucus kinda thing. The doc after examination has prescribed Oflomac forte(3ml *2) and put on special diet of Nestum Rice + milk and Nusobee milk powder, stating lactose tolerance and infection. Is this correct diagnosis? How does one conclude lactose intolerance? He has been on formulae etc for 9 months now and was tolerant to milk/ curd etc. We are worried what s gone wrong.

Lactose intolerance may be primary or secondary.
Primary lactose intolerance is due to congenital deficiency of lactase enzyme, which si a very rare entity and usually manifests since birth. Secondary lactose intolerance occurs commonly after diarrhea due to transient loss of cells producing lactase enzymes.Presence of reducing substance in stool indicates lactose intolerance.
Only mucus doesn't indicates infection as it may be present normally. As he is also symptomatic your doctor has prescribed him antibiotic.
You can also give him syp zinc for 10 days and enterogermina for 3 days.
If oral acceptance is poor or he is getting lethargic consult your doc immediately.
