Child Has Rectal Bleeding, Constipation, Blood In Bowel Movements. How Serious Can This Be?

my 4 year old grandson has had rectal bleeding on and off . His pediatrician said it was probaly due to constipation and he may have a small rectal fissure. Prune juice helps him .He is now a finicky eater. The last couple of days he has had increased blood when he has a BM. He does seem to push hard. How serious can this be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

No doubt this could be simply be a fissure due to the constipation he had. However if I were your doctor, with the history of recurrent bleeding per rectum in case of your child, I would also consider taking a surgical opinion and refer to a surgeon, who might do a preliminary per rectal examination to rule out a not uncommon pathology for a bleeding from rectum in this age group, that is a rectal polyp. This could also give rise to bleeding per rectum on coming into contact with the hardened stool.

All the above can not be dignosed without a physical examination of your child and so I would suggest you to take a surgical consultation in your area if the symptoms persist or increase. Whether it is a fissure or a polyp, both have got successful easy definitive medico-surgical treatment available with the doctors. So you need not get worried about it.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef
