Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi My One year old has been having really mushy and very smelly pale yellow poo. Its not very watery its more like a yellow paint with small cottage cheese bits. It often leaks out of the nappy. He is passing stools sometimes up to 4 in a day. they are not always a huge quantity but always the same consistency. This has been going on for about two weeks or so and coincided with a particularly bad bout of diorrea which was watery and green (a atool sample was taken but it came back clear) but that cleared up and was replaced by this. He also has been weaned around this time and is fully drinking full fat cows milk. He eats quite a variety of fruits vegs and meats, pasta and rice but none of this seems to be showing up in his poo. I would really appreciate your advice on this.
I would not worry for 4-5 motions in a day. It is not uncommon to see undigested food in the stool in children. You mentioned that the stool report is normal and he is active and growing well which is a good sign.
You can give your son more of curd/yogurt and reducde fruits and juices for a couple of days till the motion becomes normal. In case such motions persist then a re-examination of stool can be done to exclude protozoal infection.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
Weaning may sometimes result in indigestion. Try to give light meals which includes foods in meshed form.
A negative stool sample indicates that there is no infection.
After reading your post, it seems that there might be a possibility that your child is having lactose intolerance.
You can give curd or yoghurt as it may be beneficial.
If the problem persists, get your baby examined by a Paeditrician and discuss with your doctor for giving a probiotic preparation.
Also try to maintain adequate hydration of the baby by giving adequate amount of healthy fluids.
hi there, during weaning the child should be introduced to one new item every week so that his digestive system will get geared up well to handle them. Do not expose the kid to too many new things at one time. The kind of diarrhoea you have described suggests that he is having difficulty digesting the milk rather than an infective origin. But to be on the safer side get his stool exam done to rule out infective cause and at the same time revert to his formula feed for a few days and slowly introduce the cows milk initially in a dilution of 1:1 and then full fat over a period of one week. You can also give him plenty of fluids and juices if he seems dehydrated or listless. Hope this helps take care.
Hi
Thanks for your query.
As you mentioned you have started weaning ,sometimes there is digestion problem at this time.
Since stool culture is negative so nothing to worry.
Give him coconut water, lemonade, curd, boiled potato.apple and banana puree, decrease amount of milk.avoid meat for sometime.
Give lactobaccilus sachet for 3 to 4 days.
In case symptoms persist get him re evaluated by pediatrician.
Hi,
Thank you for your query,
Your child seems to have a diarrhea mostly of a viral one.
Give sips of oral rehydration fluids like Pedialyte, coconut water to prevent dehydration.
Probiotic and zinc to be added orally
Watch his hydration status by activity, urine output, skin turgor.
Consult your Doctor if loose stools are continuing or signs of dehydration develops.
Hope I have answered your query.
