Child Hyperventilates And Coughs When Crying. Connected To Asthma?
My baby gets really upset when she s hungry, tired or just after getting her out of the bathtub. She cries so hard she starts to hyperventilate and cough . Asthma runs in my family and I also get hyperventilating issues when I have panic attacks. Could this be connected? And how do I console her so she doesn t do this to herself.
It is true that asthma has a familial correlation, it is important to keep in mind that the diagnosis of asthma is not made till the child has crossed at least 5 years of age as per American guidelines. Many children may cough during early childhood and are called frequent wheezers but majority of them "outgrow" when they join school. That is why a diagnosis of wheezy bronchitis rather than asthma is more suited for such children. Also for a child to hyperventilate in response to a disturbing event, she must be at least in her infancy. It is uncommon in babies less than 6 months of age. If she has any dermatitis, then it is a phenomenon observed in babies who have maternal history of asthma. You need to distract her by immediately changing her surrounding or placing something attractive in her hand.
