Child Not Willing To Do School Work, Is Easily Distracted And Lacks Focus. Suggest?

My question has to do with my 11 year old son in the 5th grade that doesn't want to do school work for whatever reason. With the Math, he said he didn't understand it, didn't bring it home for homework because he wanted to play (his words). He has no motivation to do better or do the work. He has a quiet area at home to do homework and study. I have an incentive program in place for him to earn gifts or fun activities if he does well on test, or assignments. This has always been a constant struggle with him. He is easily distracted and lacks focus.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. However you have not mentioned from when have you noted this behaviour. Is it a recent event or has been persisting for some years?

Your approach of giving him incentive for good work is the right approach. I would suggest that you seek the guidance of a child psychologist who will assess your son for any latent problems and can even provide you some assistance.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son all the best.
