Child Suffering From Bowel Problem. Suggestions?

My child has had bowel issues for almost 1 yr. black tar looking stool that is thick. She doubles over in pain. When it does come out its not much and it has sandy like particles in it. Not pinworm. She tries to hold it in. The smell is almost a burnt smell if that makes any sense. I've tried miralax, high fiber, fruit, even a gluten free diet. I made an appt w/ gastro for this week. Is this the route to take?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Tar/black stools suggest some bleeding high up in the intestine. The lesion may be causing pain. You are doing the right thing by seeing the gastroenterologist. However I suggest that you get a stool routine and occult blood done and, if required, an ultrasonography of the whole abdomen to facilitate a diagnosis.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.
