Child Suffering From Frequent Asthma. Prescribed Seroflow 50 Inhaler. Any Side Effects?

Hi, My son (4.5 yrs old) suffers from frequent asthma . His doctor has put him on seroflow 50 inhaler - 2 puffs twice daily- for six months. he says it will act as preventive treatment also and may be it will cure his asthma forever. I am afraid about the side effects and how it will affect his development. Also please tell me whether this will create a dependency on the medicine? Thanks, Dipthi

Pulmonologist 's  Response
For controlling asthma, steroids have to be given. Since oral steroids have side effects, inhaler steroids are given as these have very little side effects. Your son will have to be under constant supervision of the pulmonologist who will adjust the dosage from time to time and taper it off as soon as possible. There is nothing like dependence on steroids. Once his symptoms are controlled, his requirement of inhalers will also come down and he can be completely off the steroids.

General & Family Physician Dr. Debraj Jash's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for query. Seroflo contains salmeterol and fluticasone. Salmeterol is a long acting bronchodilator which will help to reduce bronchoconstriction.Although it's efficacy below 5 years is controversial. Salmeterol on long term intake may lead to tremor, tachycardia, hypokalemia although chance of occurence of the side effects are uncommon. Fluticasone may lead to oral candidiasis, hoarseness of voice, reduced peak growth velocity on long term intake. The children who are put on inhaled corticosteroid has reduced peak growth velocity but attains the normal height at later age. Please wash his mouth after each bout of inhalation. Inhalational steroids are the antiinflammatory agents used for treatment of asthma which are much less toxic than oral steroids. No treatment of asthma is complete without steroids. It's more important to keep asthma under control rather than to worry about the side effects. You may consult a pulmonologist regarding further advise. Hope, I satisfied your queries.
