For controlling asthma, steroids have to be given. Since oral steroids have side effects, inhaler steroids are given as these have very little side effects. Your son will have to be under constant supervision of the pulmonologist who will adjust the dosage from time to time and taper it off as soon as possible. There is nothing like dependence on steroids. Once his symptoms are controlled, his requirement of inhalers will also come down and he can be completely off the steroids.

Thanks for query. Seroflo contains salmeterol and fluticasone. Salmeterol is a long acting bronchodilator which will help to reduce bronchoconstriction.Although it's efficacy below 5 years is controversial. Salmeterol on long term intake may lead to tremor, tachycardia, hypokalemia although chance of occurence of the side effects are uncommon. Fluticasone may lead to oral candidiasis, hoarseness of voice, reduced peak growth velocity on long term intake. The children who are put on inhaled corticosteroid has reduced peak growth velocity but attains the normal height at later age.Please wash his mouth after each bout of inhalation. Inhalational steroids are the antiinflammatory agents used for treatment of asthma which are much less toxic than oral steroids.No treatment of asthma is complete without steroids.
