Hello doctor, My 5 year old cousin is suffereing from a rare disease called Henoch-Scholein purpura. He is taking steroids now. Since steroid intake is a very bad choice for kids can you recommend what steps should be taken. We are looking forward to bring him to Valore so can you give me the contact of the doctor whom i can contact directly through email and send the profile of the patient. Thank you.

Hi and thanks for the query,
the side effects of steroids depends on five main factors. The type of steroid, the dosage of the steroid, the duration of treatment, the withdrawal strategy employed to stop the drug and individual responses to steroids.
The prednisolone generally used in HS purpura is usually very safe for its dosage is low, its for a maximum of three to four weeks and withdrawal responses are quite minimal.
However, children might react differently and you must not hesitate signaling any abnormal symptoms in case you notice any. Being compliant to treatment is a key issue in the treatment and especially in this case, doing control tests to evaluate the kidney function of the child (urine proteins, serum creatinine levels) and monitoring the child s blood pressure are key issues that must not be forgotten.
I suggest its safe, you remain calm and be watchful.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
