Child With Behavioral Problems Who Is Disinterested In Following Instructions. How To Diagnose And Treat This?

I have a 6 year old little boy with behavior problems He is constantly getting in trouble at school because he refuses to follow directions. We have tried almost everything we have read, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and ignoring the issue for a short time. Often he is a loving child willing to help with anything. I'm at a loss of where to turn for help to understand how to help him be a focused and friendly little boy. His friends don't want to play with him at school and we have had several unfruitful meeting with his teacher.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
Can you please elaborate further about his symptoms? viz does he appears at loss when given a set of multiple instructions? does he looses his things too often? does he fidgets a lot & can not sit still at a place for more than a few minutes at a time? does he tends to blurt out answers, responds/interrupts in the middle of conversation? secondly since when has he become disinterested/ audacious? Has there been recent stressful events at home or things like school changes? Has he been caught into things like fights, cruelty to animals etc? Depending upon your information I would put a possibility of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) & oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). I suggest you should consult your Pediatrician or a Psychiatrist for further clarification & a trial of medications like methylphenidate, cloinidine. Best wishes
