Child With Distended Abdomen After A Fall. Worried
My daughter fell from a trampoline onto her stomach and lower rib cage a few hours ago. She "had the wind knocked out of her" briefly, then said the lower right side of her ribs and stomach area hurt. She was quite pale for about 30 minutes and sat quietly and had a little water. An ENT friend examined her and said her breathing was fine and there was no evidence of a punctured lung. He said she is probably bruised. She does have a cold now and coughing is excruciating to her. I am concerned because 2 hours later, her abdomen is quite distended. I do not see any outward signs of a bruise yet, but the swelling of her gut is obvious and significant. Your advice is appreciated.
Abdominal trauma is not uncommon in children. Though not always
serious, some abdominal trauma could be very severe and life
threatening. That is the case with the rupture of organs. Organs
that are likely to rupture include the liver on the right lower ribs and
the spleen on the left lower ribs.
Abdominal distension is a common finding in rupture of such organs
and is as a result of bleeding.
Abdominal distension following trauma should be treated with urgency
thus it will be necessary to go to the E.R for an examination.
