Child With Swollen Arm Due To Poison Ivy Exposure. Treatment?

My son is covered in poison ivy, his arm is really swollen where he thought it was a just a bump and scratched it off. It started to look better but then come last night it looked twice as bad. If it is infected will it go away on its own or will he have to be seen. I don't want to have to pay to go to the doctor if they won't do anything. Thanks

Hello brother,
What your son got is Contact Dermatitis. It produces severe itching later leads to Reddish Colored or Non Colored Bumps then Blistering - which do not spread the poison. The leak from the blisters are from the gap that develop in the blood vessels. Cooling reduces the leak by constriction of bloos veseels.
It may heal by itself or may take upto 4 weeks.
Treatment:
1) Caladryl Lotion or Burow's solution
2) A plant herbal product called Jewelweed - remarkable effect
3) Antibiotic and anti inflammatory if get infected (after consulting Dr.)
Usually nothing to worry. But keep on eye over the allergic reaction.
Best wishes
