Child's Ears Feel Blocked. Earlier Had Grommet's Tube Inserted. Concerned

My 8year old son had gromits a few years ago and had them taken out last Christmas as consultant said he didn't need them anymore, the past few days I have noticed I am having to repeat myself to him a lot and when he is watching TV it is loud. While I was reading to him last night he asked me to speak up as he couldn't hear me he said his ears feel blocked so I took him to GP this morning and she said there was no fluid on his ears but his eardrums don't look very healthy but wouldn't tell me anything else and said she is referring him to his consultant, I spoke to his teacher today aswell to see if she has noticed any difference with his hearing she said not so much with his hearing but has noticed when he is talking to her he has started to mumble and has to stop to think about what he is saying throughout his conversation which I have also noticed. I am really concerned with GP not really telling me anything. Thank you
