I have a chronic cough and have been experiencing heart palpatations. My doctor ordered a thyroid perioxidase antibody test. i just got my results back and was told my number was 526. I know this number is high but how high. My doctor suspects Hashimoto s disease or graves disease . Initial tests suggested hyperthyroidism .

Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query in HCM.I understand your concerns.Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are produced against the enzyme peroxidase which is normally present in the thyroid.
The presence of TPO antibodies in your blood suggests that the cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease.
Anti-TPO antibodies are the most common anti-thyroid autoantibody, present in approximately 90% of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 75% of Graves' disease and 10-20% of nodular goitre.

Most probably you are having hashimoto's disease but it should be further confirmed by FNAC.

Hope you are happy with the answer.
Thank you
