When there is common cold, secretions from the nose and the paranasal sinuses trickle down into the throat irritating the throat and inducing the cough. Giving anti-tussives will not help in reducing the cough and cold, the prime cause has to be treated which is cold. My suggestions to you is to give plenty of warm water to drink, a mucolytic (such as ambroxol or bromhexine), saline nasal spray and a good antibiotic (such as a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid or cefuroxime).
