Compulsive Lying, Stealing And Manipulating. Need A Child Psychiatrist. Counselling Required?

Hi Dr. Grief, What a great service! Thank you for providing this opportunity to get a few questions answered. I am a retired elementary principal. I was in education 37 years and 30 of those as a principal. My problem is my 10 year old granddaughter. I think I need a good child psychiatrist to help in narrowing down my concerns. My granddaughter is a compulsive liar. She has to be in control at all times. She steals from family members and will manipulate any situation to her advantage. My biggest concern is she has no remorse for any of her actions. She will pretend to be remorseful, while lying to your face. Please point me in the right direction!

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your grand daughter has been experiencing. It sounds very much like a psychiatric problem and would require the services o a psychiatrist. This is usually termed kleptomania, the desire to steal even very trivial things that are of no value to the individual. Counseling and psychotherapy are usually undertaken to address this problem.

I will suggest that you meet up with your primary care doctor who would direct you to a good child psychiatrist in the area. For now, try to keep her away from occasions involving many strangers as she could become a source of embarrassmment to the family. If you should let her attend, then please always look after her at all times to make sure you.

I hope you get some help about this and feel more comfortable with her actions. I wish you well and hope she gets out of this soon.
Feel free to ask for more answers if need be.
Thanks.
