Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting your query
severe bouts of dry cough may be due to many reasons. Chronic cough has several reasons like
1. upper airway cough syndrome
2. GERD
3. asthma and allergic rhinitis
4. tuberculosis
5. COPD
6. bronchiectasis
7. non-asthmatic allergic rhinitis
These causes are to be excluded one by one by proper examination and physical examination and history taking. Do a chest x-ray. If there is sputum production then send the sputum for AFB smear, Gram stain. Go for spirometry testing. But these tests should be guided by physical examination finding.
Therefore do consult a good pulmonologist and go for the investigations under his guidance.
Thank you.

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Dr. R.A. SINGH's  Response
Hi Steph.finn,
Thanks for writing your query.
Cough can be due various causes. You should first get yourself examined and investigated to know the cause of cough.
If the cough is due to bronchoconstriction, bronchodilators like levosalbutamol will be of help.
Pain can be due to muscle pull during coughing and can be relieved by local application of pain relieving gel.
Please get yourself investigated for following :-
1. Complete Blood Count
2. Chest X-Ray (PA view)
3. Absolute Eosinophil Count
4. Auscultation of chest by a physician
I hope this is useful to you.
Thanks.

Diabetologist Dr. Prathap's  Response
hi steph.finn,

welcome to HCM,

Thanks for query,

continous cough for than one month is due to multiple cause.....no need to panic...all you need to do is to take chest xray and see for pulmonary infection....first we should rule out TB....if TB is ruled out, den next commonest cause for chronic cough is pulmnorary eosinophilia...take total blood count TBC and if eosinophil is elevated you need to take DEC tablet for 21days along with allergic tablet to reduce eosinophil count...definitely you will get cured...pain in the lower could due to some muscle spasm due to continous cough...i advice you to take some muscle relaxant tab ...you will get cured soon....better consulant some pulmonologist and take proper treatment...

Thank you,

wish you for better health,

by,
Dr.Prathap
