i am diagnosed with hiatal hernia year 2009. I'm 21 female and can barely eat because of the constant feeling of nausea. i have been transferred from one hospital to another and been given almost same medicines like omeprazole and some other antacids i can't remember, but none of them made me better. right now, i always feel down and can't sleep. sometimes i feel so hopeless i'm having suicidal thoughts, i pray a lot though, but i always feel miserable. i went to a psychiatrist and i'm in my first day of treatment today. i still feel miserable. please help me.

Hello,
There are two types of hiatus hernia - Sliding and para esophageal.
May or may not have GERD. If you have GERD you are treated with antacids.
As it has disturbed you a lot up to a stage of suicidal tendency and psychiatric opinion, it is better to do surgery. Hiatal hernia surgery can often be performed as a laparoscopic, or "minimally invasive," procedure. The advantages of laparoscopic surgery include smaller incisions, less risk of infection, less pain and scarring, and a more rapid recovery. You may able to walk around the day after hernia surgery. Generally, there are no dietary restrictions and you can resume your regular activities within a week. Complete recovery will take two to three weeks. Consult a surgical gastro enterologist and get relieved of your symptoms and worry.
Best wishes.

Psychiatrist Dr. Dr.Nehal's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

I have gone through your history.

Nausea may be a part of symptoms of stress and depression as you do not have much relief from omeprazole.

It is good that you have consulted psychiatrist. The drugs may take some time to start action so you should wait till that time.
Meanwhile you can do stress management and relaxation exercise like yoga, meditation or breathing exercise for better control over stress.

Thanks,.
