Coordination Problem, Imbalance While Walking, Epileptic Attack. Taking Eptoin. Side Effects?

My brother has been taking eptoin 100 mg tablets 3 tablets daily at night for 25 years. I would like to know what are the side effects of it, he is experiencing a coordination problem and is not being able to maintain the balance while walking. What ever alternative that we tried on Doctors advised has not worked and immediately he had epileptic attack. Given this continuing on Phynotin would be ok or should we consult the Doctor for changing his dosage or medicine. Kindly advise

Hi there ~

One does not need to take anti-epileptic medications for 25 years if he is symptom free. Doctors especially neurologists try to taper the dose of the medications after a 5 year symptom free episode of seizures. If that is the case then your brother needs to visit with a neurologist as soon as possible. Imbalance can be a side effect of the medication. I would think that giving this medication is harming him more than helping him. I would like for you to consult a neurologist as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a lovely day !

General & Family Physician Dr. Lisa Braganza's  Response
The most common side effects are neurotoxic and dose-related. These include:sedation , impaired memory ,decreased coordination ,dizziness, nystagmus, slurred speech ,confusion and even headache

If these problems do not diminish within several days, a reduction in the dose of phenytoin often will solve the problem. Problems with sedation also may be helped by splitting the dose or giving the largest dose at bedtime.

Request that you consult your physician and look into the dose adjustment or withdrawal of the drug
