Coughing And Mucus. Under Treatment For Mycobacterium Absessus. Is Coughing Due To Acid Re Flux?

I have been under treatment for mycobacterium Avium Complex and Mycobacterium Absessus for over 5 years. I wake up everyday with a lot of mucus and coughing. Unfortunately I cannot cough the mucus up far enough to be able to get a sputum sample to be rechecked. I wonder if it could be also acid refux causing this mucus and coughing in the morning. I Wheeze alot all day long also. thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your problem regarding cough and mucous.

Since you have been treated for Mycobacterium, you may have cough for different reasons and also the mucous.

But since you are rightly suspecting, your cough may be due to reflux also. You need to do these:
1. Take a course of anti reflux medication like pantoprazole for two weeks before food. your doctor will know about these.

2. Take only non oily, non spicy food

3. Keep your weight under control and do not immediately lie down after a meal

4. Do steam inhalation regularly

If your symptoms do not improve in a week or two of following the above religiously then you must get an Upper GI endoscopy and get back to me with the reports

take care and get well soon

regards
