Could Eltroxin Be The Cause For The Pressure In The Heart?
Hi, My wife Mila has recently started taking Eltroxin (50). Her thyroid reading was 12. Now she feels terrible with pressure pain in her heart area. This has happened in the past. She has had recent blood work, an ultra sound of the kidneys (adrenal) and a heart health evaluation, ultra sound / stress, and there was no indictation of problems. Is there an alternative to this drug. Mila is a Russian immigrant and has no medical insutance. Thanks Bob Irwin
Levothyroxine (Eltroxin is brand name) is the treatment of choice for hypothyroidism. There is no alternative drug of levothyroxine. Serum TSH should be measured to monitor for adequate replacement. TSH can take up to 4 months to normalize. TSH is measured 6–8 weeks after initiation of levothyroxine and then annually once you are on a stable dose of levothyroxine. You need to take levothyroxine for life-long. Pressure feeling in chest may be due to palpitation which is a very common side effect of levothyroxine. This is seen in early stage of treatment and usually resolves once serum TSH is stabilized and a stable dose of levothyroxine is established. Advice 1. Continue with Eltroxin 50 mcg as suggested by your doctor 2. Get serum TSH after 8 weeks of starting treatment. Take the report to your doctor so that he/she will further modify the dose of Eltroxin as per report. You can write at this portal too. I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question Thanks
