Could HCV Therapy Cause Addison's Disease?

Hi Doctor, I have active HCV-2b contracted during my 20 year urban EMS career (no other high risk factors or behaviors). I was dx. 1/21/2000 & have been unsuccessfully tx x3 with different variations of Interferon with Ribavirin. My last tx. was stopped due to non-response in 2004. As of 12/2011 I have been dx with Addison's Disease. I only have disability coverage for HCV issues. I have resd that HCV therapy can cause Addison's. Is this at all plausible? Thank you, Mary

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi,

The infection of hepatitis C and the respective therapy is not a common cause of adrenal insufficiency or Addison's disease.

It is true that there are some case reports where exacerbation of hepatitis C induced subclinical hypoadrenalism by interferon alpha 2 beta therapy.

Anyway, this is not a plausible cause because you have been diagnosed with Addison's disease 7 years after you stopped the HCV therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Elona Xhardo,
