Could Losartan-Hydrochlorothiazide, Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide Or Desvenlafaxine Cause Tinnitus?
I have been experiencing tinnitus (ringing in the ears) for at least the last 6 to eight months. I do not have wax buildup and there are no apparent physical anomalies in my ear canals. I take several prescription medications and have been wondering if any of them or a combination could be causing this. The most likely suspects are triamterene hctz 37.5/25 once a day, losartan hctz 100/25 once a day, and desvenlafaxine 100 mgs once per day. I take the antidepressant at night and the blood pressure meds in the morning. My internist is aware of this issue, but has not seen the need to discontinue or change my current regimen. Any input would be appreciated.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Tinnitus is common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However it this lasts for longer period then it should be evaluated. Tinnitus can occur due to causes like chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc. Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-Ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
