Could Applying Fucidine On Facial Abrasion Lead To Swelling And Pus?
Hi. I have a facial abrasion below my left eye from a biking accident. The doctor who treated me gave me Fucidin to apply to the wound to prevent an infection. After two days of usage, I notice that the wound swells and pus would ooze out after applying Fucidin. Is this normal?
Fucidin is a topical antibacterial. The doctor must have given you, hoping to prevent secondary bacterial infection of the abrasion. However, it obviously was'nt sufficient in your case and now the site is infected and there is redness, swelling and pus formation.
The best way to approach is to start on an empirical oral antibiotic for a week OR 10 days (My choice of oral antibiotic would have been Amoxycillin 500mg in combination with clavulanic acid 125 mg, thrice daily, for a week OR Cephalexin 500ng thrice daily OR Cefadroxil 500mg twice daily, for a week). This would take care of the infection.
An OTC antibacterial cream/ointment e.g 2% mupirocin can be applied twice daily after cleansing the wound with a betadine solution
An OTC pain killer e.g ibuprofen once or twice daily would help you deal with the pain.
regards
