Could Baby's Embryo Being 4 Weeks After Diagnosed Pregnancy In January Be Concerning?

hi doctor, i had LMP on 20 november 2013. I confirmed my pregnancy on 2 january 2014 by using preganews. Last day i had a scan and my doctor told me that my baby's embryo is only of 4 weeks. So i m confused . Please tell me what does it mean and should i worry about that ?

Hi and welcome to HCM,
I understand your concern. There are only two possible reasons for this.
1. The ovulation occurred late and the pregnancy is smaller than the expected dates.
2. it is a missed abortion meaning the baby is no longer alive.

Unfortunately considering your history, the second possibility is more likely as the urine test was positive on 2 january so the baby must be atleast 5 weeks then.

For similar women in my clinic, I suggest to wait for 2 weeks and get a follow up scan done. If the status is same, it indicates missed abortion. If the baby is alive and it is a delayed conception, the baby will have grown by 2 weeks and pregnancy can be continued.

Please do not worry and repeat a scan after 2 weeks to confirm things.

Hope this helped answer your query,
