Could Bleeding Tongue From An Injury Require Immediate Medical Attention In A Child?

My 2 year old was playing with daddy and banged chin on daddy's shoulder whilst this happened he bit his tongue and it bled a little everything was fine and he played more then fell asleep an hour and half later.. We went and woke him an hour later to see blood on the pillow with a tiny clot and when checking his mouth he had a bigger clot. Can this be from him biting his tongue?
Thanks

Dear Ms. Budgen,

The tongue is very vascular and tend to bleed if slightly injured. If the cut is small and not more than 1/2 the thickness of the tongue, and has clotted without further bleeding, it most likely will heal without complications. If he has bleeding from other sites such as nose, mouth, GI tract, he may have a bleeding disorder which requires further testing. This sounds like an injury related cut from his teeth. I would suggest seeing your pediatrician this week, or sooner if the bleeding does not stop within five minutes with slight pressure from a washcloth held on the area involved.
