Could Blood In Stool Be Due To Diabetes?

Hi, My husband has had blood in his stool which has been red not dark brown or black and went to the Dr today and was told it may be because of diabetes. He had his blood tested last month and glucose levels were elevated, but at that time the Dr wanted to wait a month and recheck. Is this really a symptom of diabetes??? If so I have never heard of it trying to see if we should get a second opinion

Thanks for the query.
Blood in the stool can not be due to diabetes.
Blood in stool is due to pathology of gastro intestinal tract (GIT).
If pathology at the level of stomach or duodenum then blood will be dark brown in the color , and if pathology at small bowel or large bowel than there will be fresh blood in the stool.
So you should consult a Gastroentrologist and do needed reports.

Geriatrics Specialist Dr. Prakash H Muddegowda's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Red stools is not a sign of diabetes, rather it indicates some bleeding in the intestinal tract. Get stool examination done to confirm for RBC's. If its positive he might require a rectal examination or colonoscopy to evaluate for any ulcers.
2. Glucose levels if elevated, should be followed up with HbA1C. If it is more than 7.5, its diabetes mellitus.
3. If early stages, diet control, weight reduction should help. If not under control, medications maybe necessary.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
