Could Chunky Peanut Butter Have Developed Coughing Up Of Excessive Phlegm In An Elderly Cancer Patient?
I am the primary caregiver for my 92 year old mother. She has always had irritating gas which we have treated with OTC meds successfully. She had a rough year last year. She quit smoking after 53 years of a pack a day more than 20 years ago. She has COPD and is on oxygen 24/7. Last March they found a 9cm non- small cell cancer tumor in her right lung. She was scheduled for radiation in May, but had to postpone it to July since she had emergency gallbladder removal in May. She had 15 radiation sessions and has been doing pretty well since. She uses a walker in the house, takes a bath on her own, can fix her own food(though I usually do it) and does pretty well. I had started giving her Digestive Advantage for Gas to relieve her symptoms. Starting yesterday she began coughing up phlegm (not unusual for her) but this afternoon it was phlehmy heaves. She does eat chunky peanut butter and we wondered if she could have developed a food allergy. Tonight I dosed her with Pepto Bismol and she said her stomach was settling down. I also gave her jello and it seems to be staying down. The symptom remedies are working, but I am concerned not to know the cause so we can avoid it. Any thoughts?

Hello, As a first line management antacids like pantoprazole or omeprazole can be tried. If symptoms persist you can consult a gastroenterologist and plan for an endoscopy. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
