Could Enlarged Thyroid Gland And Bounding Pulse Be Due To Hyperthyroidism?
Have enlarged painful thyroid gland, bounding pulse, short of breath, tremors, non pitting edema in fingers..take 25mg Atenolol BID (only helps a little) increasing weakness. Had I 131 30 years ago for hyperthyroidism. Question: Could I be hyperthyroidism status again??
Hi, Enlarged painful thyroid, palpitation and tremor can be features of thyrotoxicosis (increase thyroid hormones in blood). It can be due to 1. recurrence of hyperthyroidism or 2. Thyroiditis (an infection of inflammation of thyroid). Atenolol or propranolol are the drugs to improve the symptoms in both cases. You need to do a thyroid function test to confirm it is hyperthyroidism. Additional investigation needed is a technitium 99 thyroid scan (a scan done after an injection of a dye) which will help to differentiate recurrence of hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis. The treatment of hyperthyroidism is antithyroid drugs (carbimazole or Methimazole) The treatment of thyroiditis is short course of steroids.
You can get a second episode of hyperthyroidism even after Iodine 131 treatment
